Groundwater Replenishment System Virtual Tour
GroundwaterU Video Summary
Join Orange County Water District (OCWD) General Manager Michael R. Markus as he takes you on a tour of the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), the world’s largest advanced water purification system for potable reuse. You’ll see the plant up close and learn about the three treatment steps it takes to purify treated wastewater to drinking water standards.
About the GWRS
The GWRS takes treated wastewater from the Orange County Sanitation District and purifies it using a three-step process of microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light with hydrogen peroxide. The result is pure water that meets or exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards. The GWRS produces 100 million gallons of water per day; enough water for 850,000 people.
