The Rise and Fall of Urban Groundwater

GroundwaterU Video Summary

Principal scientist Simon Cox talks about the research he’s been doing in South Dunedin, New Zealand, trying to understand why groundwater rises and falls and how that affects urban environments. As sea levels rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, groundwater can become a hazard – where it lies close to the surface, houses are damper and different engineering solutions are needed to mitigate the increased risk of liquefaction from earthquakes. He describes how sea level rise can increase the groundwater elevations 1 km from the coast. The video includes cross sectional drawings that illustrate how areas away from the coast can become flooded due to sea level rise (groundwater inundation). Video also includes demonstration of groundwater water level measurement.
