Groundwater Flow Lines Tracer Test

A sand tank model is used to demonstrate the relationships between hydraulic head and groundwater flow direction, and how to draw potentiometric contour lines and associated flow lines based on the water levels measured in the piezometers.

Introduction to Groundwater Contamination by PFAS at Airports and Military Bases

The video presents an overview of the composition, use, and effects of PFAS on groundwater near airports. PFAS stands for Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances. The video shows an animation of the mechanisms of AFFF groundwater contamination. “AFFF” stands for Aqueous Film Forming Foam (pronounced “A-triple-ef”), which contains PFAS.

Artificial Recharge in The Netherlands

A unique Managed Aquifer Recharge system in the Netherlands has been operating for more than 60 years. This video shows and describes how a large part of Dutch tap water comes from rivers canals and lakes that constitute the recharge system, which has several unique features. It is an example of how artificial recharge can prevent depletion of aquifers.

Groundwater Replenishment System Virtual Tour

The Orange County Water District is the world’s largest advanced water purification system for potable reuse. You'll see the plant up close and learn about the three treatment steps it takes to purify treated wastewater to drinking water standards. The Groundwater Replenishment System takes treated wastewater and purifies it using a three-step process of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light with hydrogen peroxide. The GWRS produces 100 million gallons of water per day; enough water for 850,000 people.

Building a low-cost, real-time, aquifer monitoring network

The Nova Scotia Real-Time Aquifer Monitoring Network is a community-based, real-time groundwater monitoring network for tracking water levels in shallow aquifers. It was built after a 2016 drought in Nova Scotia caused over 1,000 domestic water wells to go dry. The water level meters used in the network are low-cost ($200), custom built units that use an ultrasonic sensor and IoT technology to measure the depth to the water table.

Regulating What We Can't See: International Law and Transboundary Aquifers

Presentation by Gabriel Eckstein (environmental attorney and president of the International Water Resources Association) to the 46th IAH Congress, September 2019. He presents the fundamentals and governance challenges associated with sharing groundwater resources across state boundaries, including between nations, and conceptual models of various transboundary aquifers are included in the presentation.
