Ten Reasons Why Our Relationship with Groundwater is a Total Mess

Presentation by John Cherry, Professor Emeritus and Chair of The Groundwater Project. The presentation was given at the 47th IAH Congress, virtual conference in 2021. He proposes there are three parts to the groundwater problem: depletion, salinization, and water quality, and 10 reasons for the global groundwater crisis: 1) Slow groundwater response times; 2) groundwater is “invisible”; 3) groundwater is difficult to monitor; 4) groundwater contamination is cumulative; 5) waste release/disposal issues; 6) fragmented regulations; 7) externalized costs; 8) globalization; 9) unknown/unlinked health impacts; and 10) ignorance.

Ohio’s Class II Injection Wells

This video includes an animation that illustrates how deep injection wells in Ohio provide a safe method for disposing oilfield waste fluids (brine) into deep bedrock without compromising water quality in aquifers.

Heavy rains make for rare sight as water floods into aquifer

This newscast video shows recharge of the Edwards Aquifer via a 40-ft wide sinkhole. The video shows the dramatic rate of recharge from a single location due to stormwater runoff.
